Our Phases of Care
“Chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasizes the body's inherent ability to heal itself without drugs or surgery.”
Your nervous system controls every cell in your body. Nerve impulses flow from the brain, down the spinal cord, and to every organ and tissue. Impulses sent back to the brain confirm that the body is functioning properly. When your nervous system isn't working correctly, neither will you.
Poor spinal alignment or mobility can interfere with this communication by irritating adjacent nerves, resulting in distorted messages to and from your brain. Chiropractic care helps restore nervous system integrity by reducing interference caused by poor spinal alignment or mobility. Chiropractic care is safe for all ages.
To begin providing you with chiropractic care, we need a thorough health history and evaluation. This includes discussing your current condition and any relevant past issues, followed by an orthopedic and neurological evaluation, and any necessary x-rays. Understanding the nature and extent of your condition is crucial for starting treatment. Your treatment plan will begin with:
X-Ray Studies
Your condition may require a weight-bearing x-ray to develop the most effective treatment plan. You can bring a copy of your X-rays from other offices or hospitals to your first visit for the doctor to review. If the X-rays are weight-bearing and taken within one year, additional X-rays may not be necessary. When X-rays are required, only the necessary views are taken. X-rays serve to:
- Provide a structural record of your spine
- Rule out cancer, disease, or other pathologies
- Locate fractures or signs of trauma
- Identify evidence of long-term spinal decay
- Confirm other examination findings
X-rays help the doctor provide precise chiropractic care and set reasonable expectations for outcomes, both short-term and long-term.
Phase 1: Relief Care
If you're in pain when you arrive, our first goal is to help you feel better. Your care will be tailored to the nature and severity of your injury or condition, whether it's acute or chronic, and other factors the doctor will explain. You'll be actively involved in all aspects of your care.
As your pain subsides, Dr. Wallace will focus on supportive care to maintain your progress and address any underlying issues. This transition is known as:
Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care
During this phase, muscles and other tissues heal more completely, helping to prevent future injuries. Building a healthy foundation takes time, effort, and patience, similar to going to the gym. Achieving flexibility and balance is essential before developing a sustainable conditioning program. The doctor will introduce a rehabilitative program tailored to your needs, lifestyle, and health. As your body heals and corrects, the frequency of care will gradually decrease. The duration and frequency of adjustments depend on your overall health and the severity and type of injury, as healing rates vary.
Once health is achieved beyond mere symptom relief, many people wish to maintain their optimal physical and mental well-being. This ongoing care is referred to as:
Phase 3: Wellness Care
When your body has fully healed, it's important to come in for periodic adjustments to maintain health and wellness. Typically, this requires a quick visit to the chiropractor one to four times per month, depending on your lifestyle and goals. This is tailored to your unique health care needs and issues.
